The view of Mormonism:
“Mormonism is considered a non-Christian cult by all of Christianity.”
Let me tell you about this… it is truthfully and entirely wrong. First of all, ‘Christianity’ is a definition outlined by the “belief of Jesus Christ.” My heart, my soul… every part of me believes in Jesus Christ. In fact, it’s not just typical belief, it’s knowledge. I have been testified to, I promise, that Jesus Christ is real. If you ask any LDS member, they will tell you themselves that they are Christians. Christianity is a broad group of people—Mormon’s are Christians through and through.
Secondly, a cult? I have never once been told by my teachers and instructors that there are expectations to meet in order to “be a Mormon.” I never signed an oath or pledge—every thing that I’ve done in this Church has been a complete and utter decision by myself. Not even my parents have ever once pressured me into being or acting a certain way for the benefit of the Church.
President Thomas S. Monson, the prophet of the LDS Church, has never stood before a congregation and said, “As your leader, you must do this…” No, never. There’s a catch to everything.
…EVERYTHING IS A CHOICE…
The Prophet stands before us and says, “If you’d like eternal happiness, eternal glory, eternal life, then this is what you must do.”
To compare, it is like receiving a toy or a gift. Heavenly Father gave us this life as a precious gift, hence the toy. Therefore, He sent us information about how to return to Him if we live our lives well (the instruction manual or pamphlet). We may play with this toy in any way that we’d like—it’s all up to you. You can throw it, clean it, smash it, burn it, do whatever you’d like, but He gave us the instruction manual and if we take care of the gift we were given, then it’s lasting happiness for us. If we do not take care of the toy, then some harm will befall it, and it will become damaged. However, there is hope in damage, because it can be repaired.
This is Mormonism in comparison to its view—people may think it is a cult, but in reality, it allows us to be so much freer. We have this agency, and these choices to make, and the Prophet is here to help guide us all and instruct us about how to live IF we want to return to the Lord. The Bible does this as well, and so does the Book of Mormon, especially the Book of Mormon.
I promise, Mormonism is not a cult, but a very freeing religion indeed. And that much is personal.
